I am writing to you as a constituent and as a British Jew horrified by the scenes of atrocities committed by Hamas in the south of Israel on October 7th. Many of our community have family and friends who were caught up in the attack and we are still mourning the loss of life.

We are now three weeks into the Gaza-Israel war which followed  Hamas’ massacre. This war has cost too many innocent lives, and is threatening to destabilise the wider region, with Hizbollah and Yemen’s Houthis threatening further attacks. There are some key asks that I would like you, as my MP, to get behind as vocally as possible:

1. Return all Israeli hostages immediately. At least 240 people are known to be held hostage in Gaza. There is no information about their safety or whereabouts - babies aged 9 months, orphaned children, and elderly grandparents. As much international pressure as possible needs to be applied through all channels to bring them back unharmed. This should be supported across the political spectrum. Taking civilian hostages is a grave violation of international law.

2. Increase humanitarian aid allowance into Gaza. This needs to happen urgently to allow medicine, food and water to reach civilians. There are over 1 million children in Gaza. In order to protect as many civilians as possible this must happen immediately to allow entry of electricity, fuel, water, food and medical personnel. The small amounts which have been allowed in thus far are simply not enough and the population is at breaking point. Less than 200 trucks have crossed in over 3 weeks when prior to this war, over 100 trucks a day were crossing the border.

3. A ceasefire doesn’t feel realistic, but de-escalation and a humanitarian pause is urgent. The war has now claimed the lives of thousands of innocent people. All governments around the world must be clear that only military action which complies with international law will be supported and they should do all they can to urge this. This is not about drawing moral equivalence or choosing sides. The reality is that severe regional escalation is already happening, and this will undoubtably lead to more loss of innocent lives on all sides. Global leaders need to use their power to find other, non-military avenues, to reduce tensions and stop further bloodshed.

4. Show solidarity with the human rights and peace building community in Israel. Many have expressed they feel completely abandoned as they have watched far too many people justify, excuse or dismiss Hamas’ murder of their friends, families and colleagues. At the same time, they watch as Western governments get behind Israel’s military response and fail to urge caution and to emphasise the importance of international law. Israel’s human rights community need support and solidarity in the days and weeks ahead as they look to rebuild and move forward.

5. Lastly, we can’t forget about the West Bank.  Settler violence is on the rise, and at least 13 Palestinian communities  - over 800 people  - have been displaced in the past three weeks and over 115 Palestinians have been killed by settlers and soldiers since the start of this war. Israel’s security minister is a well-known supporter of extremists, and has changed Israel’s arms law which will allow more Israelis, and crucially, more settlers, easier access to gun licences. Whilst people are understandably focussing their attention on Gaza and the South of Israel, we can’t lose sight of this increasing violence. The last thing Israelis and Palestinians need is more violence.  Israel’s human’s rights activists have are pleading with the international community to make it clear to the Israeli government they will not ignore or excuse violence towards and displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank.
