On 6 December 2017, Trump announced that he would initiate moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem - a decision that has smashed a long-standing international consensus in a disruptive and dangerous way. Of all the issues at the heart of the enduring Israeli-Palestinian conflict, none is as sensitive as the status of Jerusalem. The holy city has been at the centre of peace-making efforts for decades and the Israeli's are now bracing themselves for renewed violence as a result of the move.

To mark the move of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem we are holding a briefing in Parliament on Tuesday, 22 May, at 6:00pm where we will discuss the likely impact on the region and possible future pece-making efforts.

Our speakers include:

Rami Dajani (The Initiative for the Middle East) - an expert on regional and internal developments within the Palestinian Territory who previously worked as a Coordinator and Legal Advisor in the Negotiations Support Unit of the PLO where he served as a lead technical advisor to the PLO in permanent status negotiations.

Prof. Menachem Klein (Bar-Ilan University, Israel) - a senior lecturer at Bar Ilan University specializing in Israeli-Palestinian relations and the dual-national reality of East Jerusalem. Promoted Geneva Initiatives; advised former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Ben Ami at Camp David 2000.

Tareq Baconi (Columbia University, US) - a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University's Middle East Institute and a Visiting Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations. He received his PhD from Kings College London. Author of the newly published book "Hamas Contained: The Rise and Pacification of Palestinian Resistance" (Stanford University Press).

The panel will be chaired by Gabrielle Rifkind, a senior consultant to the Strategic Peacebuilding Programme (formerly Middle East Programme) at the Oxford Research Group, which she founded and directed until 2015
